This term, Broadway jazz celebrates the music of George and Ira Gershwin with “I Got Rhythm” from the hit 1930’s Broadway musical “ Crazy For You” – starring Ginger Rogers and Ethel Merman.

Throughout the 1920s and 30s George and Ira Gershwin composed some of the world’s best known and well loved music with compositions such as Rhapsody in Blue, and the opera Porgy and Bess.

Their vast catalogue of Broadway musicals and films include Lady Be Good , An American in Paris, A Star is Born and Girl Crazy,(the original Crazy for You). Their productions made stars of Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, Gene Kelly , Fred Astaire and Leslie Caron.

Together the Gershwin brothers established musical comedy as an American art form. After his brother’s early death, Ira continued to create musical successes for both film and theatre.

In recognition of their work they were awarded Oscars, Tony’s, and The Congressional Gold Medal. In 1993 a new Broadway theatre was named after them – The Gershwin Theatre. In 1998 George Gershwin was posthumously awarded a Pulitzer Prize for his body of work.

“I Got Rhythm” is a huge arrangement of constantly changing style and rhythm which builds and builds.

This time around the dancers will be asked to perform in heels – just like Broadway!!

Crazy For You was awarded the 1992 Tony Award for Best Musical and in 1993 received London’s Olivier Award.
